5.9.2008 -- MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center Receives Prestigious Award for Clinical Research
MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center is one of only 10 community oncology practices in the country to receive honors from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and The ASCO Cancer Foundation for efforts to improve care of people with cancer through participation in clinical trials. ASCO's 2008 Clinical Trial Participation Award will be presented to MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center on June 1, 2008, at ASCO's 44th Annual Meeting in Chicago.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. A stroke is caused by a blocked or burst blood vessel in the brain. Without a steady flow of blood, brain tissue begins to die. Recognizing the symptoms of a stroke and getting immediate treatment can save brain tissue, and with it, memories and abilities.

5.8.2008 -- MeritCare Gives Employees a Green Ride
MeritCare has teamed up with Metro Area Transit (MAT) to get employees to work in a way that is better for the environment. The program provides MeritCare employees who commit to taking the bus to work a free bus pass. The program will reduce carbon emissions by reducing the number of employees driving to work and will help commuters save money. A pilot of the program has been tested with positive results.

5.5.2008 -- Over 65 Percent of Adults Overweight or Obese; Free Educational Event Set for Monday, May 19
According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), in 2003-2004, an estimated 66 percent of U.S. adults were classified as overweight or obese. Being overweight increases a person’s risk of many diseases and health conditions, including diabetes. To educate people about the importance of weight management, MeritCare is holding an educational event on Monday, May 19, called "Obesity on the Rise and Diabetes Control."

5.1.2008 -- New Study Finds 45 Percent Decrease in Accidental Childhood Injuries
- However, accidental injury remains the leading killer of kids. With spring upon us, Safe Kids offers tips to keep children safe.
In a 20th anniversary national report by Safe Kids USA, accidental injuries in children have decreased 45 percent since 1987. "The statistics show tremendous progress, but we can't lose sight that accidental injury remains the leading killer of our nation's kids and that many of these injuries can be prevented," says Bobbi Paper, Safe Kids Fargo/Moorhead coordinator. "But more still needs to be done."
