Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (laparoscopic)

Developed and refined over the past 30 years, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery has proven to be a safe, effective and permanent weight loss solution. It can be done using an open or laproscopic method.

Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery was developed in 1990 for the removal of gallbladders. Over the years, this surgical approach has expanded to include hernia surgery, removal of the appendix and colon, correction of reflux (heartburn) and more. In 1994, gastric bypass surgery joined the ranks. In appropriate patients, this less-invasive approach can be just as effective as the open procedure.

How does it work?

In performing a laparoscopic gastric bypass, the surgeon inserts a small tubular instrument through small incisions in the abdomen. The instrument has a tiny camera on the end, allowing the surgeon excellent visualization of the inside of the abdomen. With specially designed surgical instruments inserted through the small incisions, the surgeon performs the gastric bypass procedure.

How does the laparoscopic approach compare with the traditional "open" gastric bypass procedure?

  • The laparoscopic technique usually shortens the hospital stay and leads to a quicker recovery.
  • Fewer wound-related problems occur.
  • Statistics on weight loss and complications appear to be similar to the open procedure.

MeritCare surgeons began selecting patients for this less-invasive technique in June of 2002. Not every patient is a candidate, and we use care in selecting who is appropriate. If you have an interest in this technique, please ask your surgeon. Note, too, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery recommends laparoscopic weight-loss surgery be performed by surgeons who are experienced in both laparoscopic and open bariatric procedures. MeritCare has experienced surgeons in both procedures.
