Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to make still and live video pictures of the heart, major organs, reproductive or urinary tracts and other soft tissue structures within the body.
3D/4D Ultrasound
New 3D/4D ultrasound technology is now being used at MeritCare for urology and OB scans. 3D imaging is being used at the MeritCare Broadway location in the urology department to enhance the visualization of rectal wall tumors. The 3D images aid in determining the extension of tumor invasion which helps with treatment planning.
For OB patients, 3D/4D ultrasound is being used during routine screening ultrasounds and during detailed perinatal scans. 3D adds the 3rd dimension which gives a depth perception to the images. This technology also allows the ability to rotate the image to view it from different angles to maximize the image information. 4D allows moving or real-time images. By watching the fetus move, fetal well being can be better assessed. The 3D/4D technology for obstetrical exams is currently available at MeritCare's Broadway, West Fargo, South University and Southpointe sites.
What Should I Expect?
You will be asked to lie on an examination table near the ultrasound scanner. After ultrasound gel is applied, a hand-held instrument, called a transducer will be guided across your skin. The sonographer will watch the image on the ultrasound monitor and permanently record specific images. It usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour for each test. A radiologist will interpret the test results and findings will be reported to you by your doctor.
How Should I Prepare for My Ultrasound?
Your physician will discuss with you any preparation that is need for your exam. If your abdomen region is to be examined, you may be asked not to eat or drink prior to your exam. You will be asked to arrive with a full bladder is your uterus and ovaries are to examined. It is no longer necessary to have your bladder full for obstetrical exams.
