Magnetic Resonance Imaging

MRI has been useful in diagnosing many disorders. Many disorders of the central nervous system, joints, abdominal and pelvic organs and heart and circulatory system can be detected with the use of an MRI.

What Can I Expect?

You will be asked to change into a gown and lie on an examination table that moves through a large tunnel. Your heart rate and breathing will be monitored. You will not feel anything during the examination, but you may hear noises. The technologist will ask you to remain completely still because slight movements may alter the results of the MRI. The injection of a contrast agent may be given prior to the procedure.

How Can I Prepare for My MRI?

In order to prepare for your MRI please read the following guidelines:

  • Adults who are having an MRI for their abdomen, pelvic area or liver should not eat or drink for 3-4 hours prior to the exam.
  • Adults who are having an MRI for their chest and heart should not consume coffee, tea or stimulants at least 5 hours prior to the exam.
  • It is essential before your MRI that your technologist knows about all metallic devices that may be present inside your body. This may include: pacemakers and/or pace wires, embedded shrapnel, aneurysm clips, cochlear stimulating devices and artificial valves surgically affixed to your heart.
  • You will be asked to remove all loose or foreign metal objects such as jewelry, watches, dentures, credit cards and hairpins.
  • You may be asked to remove make-up if your eyes are being examined. Your hair should be free of wet styling gel and if you are pregnant, MRI is generally not recommended.
  • Children under the age of two generally have oral or IV sedation. Children older than two may undergo general anesthesia. Children should not eat or drink anything for four hours prior to the exam. If possible, it is best to schedule your child's MRI right before his or her nap time.
  • All children should wear clothing without snaps, buttons, or zippers - elastic only.
