Mammograms
Mammograms detect about two-three times as many "early" breast cancers as a physical examination and detect the presence of micro-calcifications, which may be the only sign of breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer is key to a woman's long-term survival.
What Can I Expect?
A mammogram consists of two views of each breast. Breasts are pressed firmly between plates and only takes a few minutes. A radiologist analyzes the X-rays to look for abnormalities or changes. A yearly mammogram is recommended for women over 40 years of age. Mammograms for women ages 20-39 are usually recommended on the basis of personal risk or need.
How Should I Prepare For a Mammogram?
- Wear a two-piece outfit.
- Do not use deodorants, powders, ointments or creams.
- The exam will take approximately thirty minutes.
- Avoid coming for your mammogram just prior to or during your menstrual period if you have breast pain at that time.
- If you have breast implants, please let the receptionist know when you schedule the exam.
R2 Reader
MeritCare Imaging Services offers an additional tool in the fight against breast cancer - the R2 Reader. A computer-aided detection system that helps radiologists read mammograms, the R2 Reader is able to highlight potentially abnormal regions on mammograms that may have previously gone undetected.
