Stages of Parkinson's Disease

  • During the "honeymoon" or initial period, most medications work very well, easily relieving symptoms.
  • During the middle period, medications continue to be used. Therapy plays more of a role, too, lessening symptoms by directly addressing them. A speech therapist, for example, can help people who have speaking or swallowing difficulties; a physical therapist can help improve stability while walking.
  • During the later stage, therapy and medications continue to be used, but the effectiveness of the medications may become less predictable. Deep brain stimulation may prove a good option for select candidates.
