Platelet Reduction

Platelet Reduction is used in diseases that cause the body to produce an excess of platelets. Such diseases may include polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, agnogenic myeloid metaplasia or chronic myelogenous leukemia these may also be referred to as myeloproliferative disorders. Having an excess of platelets in the body increases the patients risk for stroke and heart attack. Apheresis is used to remove the excess platelets and return the rest of the blood to the body.
