Dialysis Program

Dialysis treats kidney or renal failure. As the kidneys begin to fail, they lose their ability to clean the toxins from the blood and to eliminate excess fluids from the body. Dialysis assumes the function for the kidneys when they start to fail or no longer work. The goal of MeritCare Dialysis Services is to improve the quality of life of those individuals who are diagnosed with acute renal failure, end stage renal disease (ESRD) or Chronic Kidney Disease-Stage 5 (CKD5). We are proud to provide dialysis services throughout the region where dialysis services are not available. We strive for personal attention and an individualized plan of care for every patient.

Therapy Options

MeritCare provides several types of dialysis services to its patients. Standard Hemodialysis treatments meet patients' needs in Fargo and in four outpatient units located in the region. The Peritoneal Dialysis Service offers training and ongoing management of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Acute Dialysis Services offer a variety of therapies for adult and pediatric patients that include:

Support Services

MeritCare provides many specialized services to support patients with renal disease. Interventional Radiology provides fistulograms, declotting procedures of arterio-venous fistulae or grafts and dual lumen catheter insertion. Transplant Services provides consultative services to determine if a patient is a candidate for a kidney or kidney-pancreas transplant. They also perform the transplant and provide the follow-up required after surgery. MeritCare's Surgical Services has experienced vascular access surgeons who insert arterio-venous fistulae or grafts and peritoneal dialysis accesses.
