Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology, the study of the heart's rhythm, is used to diagnose rhythm disturbances in the heart and to determine the best drugs and treatment options for heart conditions. Treatment may involve an ablation procedure, which uses a small, controlled radio-frequency "burn" to interrupt an abnormal electrical circuit in the heart that may be causing the abnormal rhythm.

An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), which contains both a pacemaker and defibrillator, may also be prescribed. The defibrillator can shock the heart out of a potentially lethal rhythm problem, while the special pacemaker may sometimes make it possible to stop the abnormal rhythm without needing a shock at all.
