Immediate Side Effects of Cancer
Appearance
Cancer will bring many changes to your body, not the least of which are physical. You may experience weight gain or loss, hair loss, and changes to your breasts, among other side–effect changes. The great majority of these changes are temporary, and after treatment, your body will begin to return to normal.
- Hair Loss
Many people fear the loss of their hair when they get a cancer diagnosis, but there are a variety of options and helpful programs that allow for patients to decide for themselves how they will handle this issue. The process of losing hair from chemotherapy and radiation is just that—a process, and each person deals with it in his or her own unique way.
- Breast Changes from surgery
Many women suffer from a negative self–image following breast cancer surgery. Fargo's Just for Women was designed with that woman in mind. They offer private fitting rooms, numerous products, and free personal consultations for women prior to or after breast surgery.
Other sites recommended by breast cancer survivors from Roger Maris Cancer Center include:
Gastric Effects
Nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and ostomies are all potential gastric side–effects from cancer treatment. Most will be temporary, but it is important to know what the issues are and how to manage them appropriately.
Blood Count Effects
Low white and red blood cell and platelet counts are all possible side–effects of cancer treatment. Any of these issues can cause serious side–effects, so it is important to understand what precautions are necessary to ensure your own long–term health.
Oral Effects
The type and intensity of treatment or medications may cause some oral side effects that affect your sense of taste and smell.
