Lymphedema
What Is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the chronic swelling of part of the body caused by an abnormal build-up of lymph fluid. It most often involves an arm or leg, but also can occur in the face, neck, abdomen or other parts of the body. The condition most often causes a feeling of heaviness and cosmetic deformity and may cause repeated episodes of infection (cellulitis and lymphangitis).
The Kinds of Lymphedema
Primary Lymphedema is caused by malformation of the lymph system. The abnormality may be present at birth, can occur during adolescence or later in life.
Secondary Lymphedema occurs when the lymph system is damaged or a part is removed, as with radiation or cancer surgery. This type of Lymphedema can arise months or even years following treatment.
Lymphedema Symptoms
- Initially, you may notice swelling.
- Jewelry or clothing may feel tight.
- Sometimes the limb has a sensation of "pins and needles" or heaviness.
- Your doctor should always evaluate unusual or persistent swelling.
Can Lymphedema Be Prevented?
There are precautions you can take to minimize your risk of developing or stimulating lymphedema.
- Avoid cuts, scratches, insect bites and pet scratches to prevent infection
- Use protective wear such as gloves when gardening or washing dishes, etc.
- Take injections, blood tests and blood pressures on your healthy arm
- Maintain meticulously clean skin to avoid infection
- Use lotion or moisturizers
- Maintain a healthy diet and avoid weight gain
- Do not over-exert the arm with excessive exercise or work
- Use caution to avoid temperature extremes such as saunas, hot tubs and steam baths
- Use care with manicures and pedicures
- Use sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher
Can Lymphedema Be Cured?
In most cases, damage to the lymph system cannot be repaired. However, good care and attention to certain basic rules can control lymphedema. People with lymphedema can live a normal and active lifestyle if they take appropriate steps to manage their symptoms.

Lymphedema Management
Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to manage lymphedema on your own. If you notice signs of lymphedema, see your doctor first. He/she can refer you to MeritCare Physical Therapy if appropriate. Physical therapy will work closely with your doctor to develop an individualized treatment program to meet your needs.
Support from Foundation
The Lymphedema Program was made possible through the generous support of people who give to the MeritCare Foundation. The only one of its kind in this region, the Lymphedema Program was developed through a Foundation grant that helped provide education and special training for MeritCare physical therapists who work with the program.
