Breast/Ovarian and Colorectal Cancer Risk Assessment Programs
Cost of Service
If your risk assessment indicates you are eligible for genetic testing, and you elect to pursue testing, a consultation with a medical geneticist will be scheduled. Because it has been shown that the process of genetic testing has the potential of raising many emotional and interpersonal issues, an appointment with the program psychologist is also offered and strongly recommended to those who proceed on to genetic testing. Before the testing can occur, you will be asked to sign a consent that indicates you understand the testing and have been counseled.
At this point in time, education services along with the individualized cancer risk assessment and recommendations for screening are provided at no cost to you. This is possible through generous donations to the MeritCare Foundation.
Consultations (by referral and at your request) that are provided by the medical geneticist, psychologist and other medical specialists, as well as the actual genetic testing costs are your responsibility. If you elect to request insurance coverage for these referrals and testing, please check with your insurance company regarding coverage of these services. MeritCare and (often) consulting laboratories have departments to assist you with this process.
