In addition to health plan access and coverage, Medica offers several wellness and preventative care programs. It also continually seeks health care reform to expand choices while maintaining affordability.

Audience

Medica has 1.25 million members and 24,000 providers in the Upper Midwest with a focus on Minnesota and its surrounding states. Available to 98 percent of Minnesota's residents, Medica is the state's largest Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).

Type of Quality Data

Medica serves its members by offering quality reports on primary care clinic systems and hospitals within its network area.

Primary care clinic reports focus on several common health care issues:

  • Diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Continuity of care
  • Child and teen check-up

Hospital quality reports focus on three areas of patient safety:

  • Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE), a computer system used by physicians to order and track medications and prevent prescription errors
  • Evidence Based Hospital Referral (EHR), a measure assessing hospital performance on seven high-risk conditions
  • Intensive Care Unit Physician Staffing (IPS), an assessment of the training, credentials and quality of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) staff

Data Source

Medica's primary care clinic reports are compiled by Medica's registered nurses. The report areas reflect common health care issues and are organized by Medica health plan types. The clinic systems were selected based on their Medica member volume and participation in Medica review programs. They also had a sample size of 30 or more.

Hospital safety survey results are provided to Medica by the LeapFrog Group, a national organization that assesses health care quality. The three reporting areas (outlined above) were chosen because of their overall importance to patient care.
