Recovery and Outcome from Acquired Brain Injury

HOW TO WORK WITH THE BRAIN-INJURED CHILD AT DIFFERENT COGNITIVE LEVELS

Level X — Purposeful/Appropriate(Modified Independent)

The child is able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in all environments but may require periodic breaks. He anticipates the impact of his impairments and disabilities on his ability to complete daily living tasks and takes action to avoid problems before they occur. However, he may require more than the usual amount of time and/or compensatory strategies to do so. The child is able to independently think about the consequences of decisions or actions but may require more than the usual amount of time and/or compensatory strategies to select the appropriate decision or action. Occasional periods of depression may occur, and irritability and low frustration tolerance may persist when the child is feeling sick, fatigued and/or under emotional distress.
