Recovery and Outcome from Acquired Brain Injury
The experience of returning home with a traumatically brain injured child commonly produces mixed feelings on the part of both the family and child. Feelings of anxiety, ambivalence, fear and inadequacy may prevail, as parents think about the daunting task of now having primary responsibility for the rehabilitation of their child. The child may also have fears of adjustment to his or her new self and acceptance by family and friends.
It is important to stress to parents and their children:
- These feelings are normal.
- Adjustment takes time.
- There are resources available for support and guidance.
