Assessment of Children With Moderate to Severe TBI
Glasgow Coma Scale
This observational scale is used in the emergency room and intensive care unit to rate the severity of injury on newly injured patients. The items rated include:
- eye opening
- motor response
- verbal response
Scores of 3-8 are defined as
severe injury, 9-12 as a
moderate injury and 13-15 as
mild injury. This scale is used both for assessment and prediction.
On this scale, the score is the total of the three categories of response. The maximum score is 15, and the minimum is three. The most severely injured persons score the lowest.
