Neonatal Growth and Development Follow-up Program

The neonatal growth and development follow-up program is designed for graduates of the Intensive Care Nursery at MeritCare Children's Hospital who are at risk for developmental delay.

The team approach

The program enables children and their families to see a variety of specialists in one location and on one day. This eliminates the need to schedule separate appointments.

The appointment lasts approximately four hours, however, the exact length of time will vary depending on the number of specialists the child needs to see.

Through the program, a team of health care professionals work together with children and their families to determine a care plan that meets the needs of everyone involved.

An individualized program

Following the appointment, the team of specialists will meet to develop a treatment plan based specifically on the child's needs. Community agency personnel are welcome to attend this meeting.

The team of specialists

Depending on the child's individual medical needs, the team may include the following:

  • Neonatologist
  • Pediatrician
  • Cardiologist
  • Neurologist
  • Nutritionist
  • Nurse
  • Occupational therapist
  • Respiratory therapist
  • Social worker
  • Endocrinologist
  • Surgeon
  • Rehabilitation specialist
  • Geneticist
  • Child psychologist
  • Child psychiatrist
  • Gastroenterologist
  • Speech/language pathologist
  • Physical therapist

The neonatal growth and development follow-up program is not designed to replace the care of the family doctor, but to supplement it. A full report is always sent to the child's family doctor.

Billing information

The treatment provided at the neonatal growth and development outpatient follow-up program is covered by most insurance companies and Medicaid. Fees will include a physician and facility charge as well as a charge for any therapies or studies completed.
