Art Activities

Bead Activities

  1. Allow the child to string beads on various mediums: chenille sticks, leather strings, ribbon, yarn, etc. If using yarn, stiffen the end with tape.
  2. Bead creations give patients a chance to follow directions, make choices and organize.

Painting Activities

  1. Choose an appropriate brush for hand development. Some children may need a larger brush handle in order to grip it properly.
  2. Painting may offer a child the opportunity to increase attention, initiate activity and manipulate objects.
  3. In the process of playing, paint a design for the child to copy, and encourage the child to describe the colors and shapes they are using.

Play-Doh

  1. Recipe for homemade Play-Doh:
    • 1 cup flour
    • 1 cup salt
    • 1 cup water with food coloring
    • 1 teaspoon oil
    • Combine ingredients and cook over medium heat.
  2. Encourage the child to participate in the cooking, with supervision. This will help with sequencing.
  3. Playing with Play-Doh will encourage initiation and strengthen the fine-motor muscles.
  4. Lemon or other scented extracts may be added to the water. Playing with scented colors or markers:
    • Provides an opportunity to develop sensory awareness and increase attention
    • Allows the child to make choices
