Selected from 6,000 hospitals nationwide, MeritCare was the only North Dakota hospital named in the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals ® National Benchmarks for Success study, published in Modern Healthcare (May 24, 2004 issue).
Solucient, the nation’s largest healthcare information company, bases its annual findings on an extensive array of publicly reported information, much of it from MedPAR (Medicare Provider Analysis and Review) data. Through rigorous evaluation of the information by Solucient’s physicians and statisticians, the company compares the performance of hospitals nationwide, including clinical excellence, operating efficiency, financial health and responsiveness to the community.
A Significant Achievement
How important is this award? Is it credible? Did hospitals ask – or even pay – to be included? These are valid questions because while many awards can be touted, not all of them carry weight. The Solucient study has significance. It is objective because the data comes from Medicare records and the process is involuntary – hospitals do not ask to be surveyed.
MeritCare is proud to be named one of America’s best hospitals. The award reflects superior clinical, operational and financial performance by our team. “This is a tribute to the level of service and the passion for caring that MeritCare associates provide everyday. This award truly belongs to all of our over 6,200 associates. We appreciate their dedication to quality healthcare,” says Dr. Roger Gilbertson, MeritCare president/CEO.
For people in this region, the award means a hospital close to home that provides nationally recognized care. Solucient estimates that patients receiving care at a 100 Top Hospital are likely to experience fewer complications, shorter hospitalization and better survival rates.
Patients who experience quality healthcare have confidence in their medical team; they know the people caring for them have the expertise and training to perform their jobs well. Accreditations and meaningful awards provide a way to distinguish healthcare quality. At MeritCare, receiving accreditation is taken very seriously. Every day MeritCare associates provide patients with a level of service that meets the highest standards. In fact, many have taken the initiative to earn additional certifications and degrees.
Nationwide, quality in healthcare will soon take on greater significance. A major effort by several organizations is now underway to connect the public with reliable, useful information about the performance of hospitals, physicians and healthcare systems. Experience, outcomes and efficiency all make a difference. The ultimate goal is to ensure healthcare excellence while preserving affordability.
MeritCare fully supports efforts to communicate performance information that will benefit the public and applauds credible organizations that strive to make this information useable and relevant so that patients are able to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
For healthcare from one of the nation’s best, experience MeritCare and experience quality.
