1.10.2008 — New Kidquest Program Provides Support for Overweight Children and Their Families
Children are our future; unfortunately 1 in 5 children in the United States is overweight and faces a lifetime of health risks unless they lose weight. MeritCare’s new Kidquest Program was developed to provide support to overweight children between ages 8-12 and their families by helping to change thoughts and behaviors as well as environmental and lifestyle factors contributing to weight gain. Participation from parents is required in order to improve execution of learned skills and maximize long-term outcomes. Program goals include: ? Establish healthy eating patterns ? Increase physical activity ? Use behavioral and parenting tools to implement and maintain lifestyle changes Groups will meet weekly for the first 20 weeks followed by seven monthly sessions over the course of one year. Children and parents will meet in separate groups for one hour, and will also meet together for 15 minutes before or after the group for lifestyle coaching. Activity nights will also be scheduled, including the Fargo downtown YMCA’s XerZone Playstation Gym. Thanks to grant from the MeritCare Foundation, we are able to offer two groups free of charge. The first group is scheduled to start in February 2008 and is limited to 12 families. Childhood obesity is a significant public health risk for overweight children increasing their risk for developing medical problems, depression and low self-esteem. These children also have a high probability of becoming overweight adults, increasing their chances of future medical complications. Groups will be led by licensed psychologists and licensed registered dietitians. For more information call the Eating Disorder Institute at (701) 234-4111 or (800) 4010 ext. 4111.
