Barb Hansen - Honorary Chairperson

2006 Honorary Chairperson
Barb Hansen, Hillsboro, N.D.

Barb Hansen of Hillsboro, N.D., is not a stranger to cancer. Many of her closest friends and family have struggled with the disease. Some, like her mother, are survivors. Other loved ones, including her grandmother and father, lost their lives in the battle. In April 2006, Barb, too, was diagnosed with cancer and began a fight of her own.

MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center has been an important part of Barb's battle. They were there for the first test and will be there supporting her every step of the way. The technical treatment she receives is state-of-the-art, but the personal treatment is what she'll remember forever. "I'm not just another patient that walks through the door," says Barb. "That matters so much."

For Barb, the hardest part about cancer is waiting. Waiting for tests, waiting for results, always waiting for the next step. But she has decided to stop waiting and start acting. In her role as Honorary Chairperson, Barb encourages others to get involved in events like "61for61" that support cancer research and treatment. On a personal level, she remembers that a little care and compassion can make a big difference. Taking her purse-making hobby to a new level, she designs purses, tote-bags, book covers and more for other cancer patients — making them feel less alone in their fight.

Barb's message is one of determination, hope and faith. Determined to get people to work together. Hoping the wait will soon be over. Faith that a cure will be found.
