Pioneering the Practice of Medicine: Dr. Olaf Sand
As a founding physician of St. Luke's Hospital and Fargo Clinic, Dr. Olaf Sand holds a prominent place in MeritCare's history. But his legacy encompasses far more.
As a physician, Dr. Sand exemplified dedication to the patient. He was known to visit the hospital late in the evening to check on desperately ill patients, often staying the entire night to battle for their lives. He put patients first. He also believed in the mission of health care: to serve everyone.
As a visionary, Dr. Sand foretold the benefits of specialists working together for the good of the patient. With passion, he personally visited individual doctors in the area, trying to convince them of the need for a multi-specialty group practice in Fargo. Many scoffed at the idea of a "mini-Mayo Clinic," but some joined.
As a human being, Dr. Sand epitomized heartfelt care to patients, many who regarded him as their beloved friend. At times the care was creative, too, such as when Dr. Sand prescribed sight-seeing jaunts around town to help speed the recovery of a seriously ill patient.
For the great dedication, innovation and humanity he brought to medicine, we celebrate Dr. Sand, and we aspire today to follow in his footsteps.
