Choosing a Primary Care Doctor

We encourage patients to choose a primary care doctor. Most medical needs can usually be met by a primary care doctor in the areas of:

Scheduling an Appointment

  • By phone - Call MeritCare for help in finding a primary care physician who will meet your needs (701) 234-5570 or (800) 821-5167 (toll-free).
  • By mail - Send your written request to your select MeritCare Clinic, you will receive confirmation by return mail or by phone.
  • Cancellations - Please call your MeritCare clinic in advance to speak a staff person (in the department where your appointment is scheduled) for assistance in rescheduling.

Transferring Medical Records

  • If you are new to MeritCare, call: Release of Information at (701) 234-2366 to assist you in obtaining a release form for the transfer of your records to your new MeritCare clinic, or if you would like to receive a copy of your medical record.

Confidentiality - All information in your medical record is held in strict confidence at all times. No part is ever revealed to anyone without your signed permission.

Your First Appointment

Before your first visit to a MeritCare clinic, a Patient Services representative will call with information and directions to the clinic. When you arrive, a MeritCare representative will:

  • Help you complete paperwork for your medical record.
  • Provide information about insurance and billing.
  • Acquaint you with the clinic facility.

Your Next Appointment

Some MeritCare clinics have centralized registration, usually in the main lobby, where you must check-in before reporting to your doctor's department. Otherwise, you report directly to your doctor's department to check-in. Bring your insurance card for staff to verify insurance information and your current address.

For unexpected illness or injury, when your primary care doctor is unavailable, MeritCare Walk-In Clinics provide non-emergency, quality health care.

A convenient clinic for minor medical services, FastTrack medical care for anyone 18 months and older. No appointment is required.
