Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders
Sometimes the dementia turns out to be caused by a treatable condition (depression, a medication reaction, a thyroid problem, a vitamin deficiency, etc.). If this is the case, we take steps to treat the condition, which often reverses the dementia.
When further treatment is required, we offer improved drug therapy options that can treat or stabilize the disease. And even when there is not a medication to treat the dementia itself, drug therapy can still play an important role by easing physical, behavioral and co-existing psychiatric symptoms. The appropriate medication in the correct dose can help lessen symptoms such as agitation and anxiety and improve sleep and participation in activities. As national and international research continues to make new drugs accessible, MeritCare stays up-to-date on what's available and what works.
Beyond meeting medical needs, we also focus on educating and supporting the patient and family. By taking certain steps, patients and families can better manage their changing situation, thereby maximizing quality of life. Good self care (including exercise and nutrition), a suitable home environment, new routines, activities that interest the individual, family structure – all play a role in bringing about the best possible outcome.
If the time comes that a situation requires commitment, MeritCare connects patients and families with the commitment support and case management services needed to make the transition as easy as possible. And because helping the family cope and adapt is an important aspect of treatment, our program works closely with the Minnesota/North Dakota Alzheimer's Association, ensuring access to support groups and family education in our region.
