So what is Twitter, anyway?

Twitter is a fast-growing social networking tool that serves as a straightforward outlet for quick, short messages geared toward the public. It lets users create individual profiles by answering the simple question, "What are you doing?" With only 140 characters of space, users must be clear and terse in their messages or "tweets". While users are able to send messages out into the public, no user is required to send out any personal information. Users are also able to "follow" other Twitter members in order to find out what they are doing as well.

Why use Twitter?

People use Twitter to ask questions, follow people that are interesting, promote links to various websites, share news stories, and to coordinate events during conferences. Basically, it is used as an online tool to communicate with other people. MeritCare has begun utilizing Twitter as a resource to keep patients informed about news, events, patient stories, and much more.
